This activity is part of the ambitious project funded by AICS Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, "Programme to support socio-economic recovery in the protected area of Shobak Castle," implemented by the University of Florence (shobak.unifi.it). The project includes specialized training for professionals in the archaeological and museum sectors, as well as the development of tourist routes and site interpretation at Shobak. The University of Florence, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, led by Prof. Fadi Bala'awi (himself an international expert in the field of restoration), has been engaged in archaeological studies of this highly important medieval site since 2002.
"The works commencing today," says project director Michele Nucciotti, "mark a fundamental milestone for Jordanian-Italian cultural cooperation; they also represent a significant step towards the preservation of Shobak's Crusader-Islamic Heritage for future generations, a goal that the involved parties aim at further implementing in the next years."
The University of Florence is closely collaborating with the Department of Antiquities at both national and regional levels. Two experts in the field and officials from the DoA, Mr. Aktham Oweidi as the General Focal Point and Mr. Abdallah Rawashdeh, the Director of DoA in Ma'an, ensure the alignment of the project with the development objectives and quality standards set by the DoA at the national level. Furthermore, the University has established a local management structure, both for the construction site, with the Works Director Arch. Maria Elena Ronza, and for the entire project cycle, through a Local Office coordinated by Dr. Raffaele Ranieri.
The works starting today will focus on ensuring the permanent safety of two important medieval architectures: the Crusader church of Saint Mary (1115-1118) and the medieval soap production facility from the Mamluk period (1260-1516). These are emergencies of absolute historical, archaeological, and touristic interest due to their uniqueness. The works are being carried out by IMKAN Construction, a high-profile contractor based in Amman, and are expected to equip the site, by November 2024, with a newly conceived museum housed in the basement of the church of Saint Mary (the most important Christian architecture from the Crusader period in Jordan).
With the commencement of these significant works, a new chapter in the preservation and promotion of Jordan's cultural heritage unfolds, promising not only enhanced safety for these medieval treasures but also greater opportunities for cultural tourism and economic development in the region.
تأتي هذه الفعالية ضمن مشروع طموح الذي يتم تمويله من قِبَل وكالة التعاون الإيطالية للتنمية AICS، بعنوان "برنامج لدعم الاستعادة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية في المنطقة المحمية لقلعة الشوبك"، الذي تنفذه جامعة فلورنسا (shobak.unifi.it). يتضمن المشروع تدريبًا متخصصًا للمحترفين في قطاعات الآثار والمتاحف، بالإضافة إلى تطوير مسارات سياحية وتفسير الموقع في الشوبك. منذ عام 2002، تشارك جامعة فلورنسا بالتعاون مع دائرة الآثار العامة الأردنية، بقيادة عطوفة البروفيسور فادي بلعاوي (الذي يعتبر خبيرًا دوليًا في مجال الترميم)، في دراسات أثرية لهذا الموقع المهم الذي يعود إلى العصور الوسطى.
"تمثل الأعمال التي تبدأ اليوم"، يقول مدير المشروع ميشيل نوتشي، "تمثل معلمًا أساسيًا للتعاون الثقافي الأردني الإيطالي؛ كما أنها تمثل خطوة مهمة نحو الحفاظ على التراث الصليبي-الإسلامي في الشوبك للأجيال القادمة، وهو هدف يسعى الأطراف المعنية لتحقيقه بشكل أكبر في السنوات القادمة."
تتعاون جامعة فلورنسا بشكل وثيق مع دائرة الآثار على المستويين الوطني والإقليمي. يضمن اثنان من الخبراء في هذا المجال ومسؤولون من دائرة الآثار، السيد أكثم عويدي بصفته النقطة المركزية العامة والسيد عبد الله الرواشدة، مدير دائرة الآثار في معان، توافق المشروع مع أهداف التنمية ومعايير الجودة التي حددتها دائرة الآثار العامة على المستوى الوطني. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، قامت الجامعة بإنشاء هيكل إدارة محلي، سواء لموقع البناء تحت إشراف مديرة المشروع المهندسة ماريا إلينا رونزا، وأيضًا لدورة المشروع بأكمله، من خلال مكتب محلي يتم تنسيقه بواسطة الدكتور رافاييل رانييري.
ستركز الأعمال التي تبدأ اليوم على ضمان السلامة الدائمة لاثنين من المعالم الهامة في العصور الوسطى: كنيسة القديسة ماري من الفترة الصليبية (1115-1118) ومنشأة إنتاج الصابون من العصر المملوكي (1260-1516). هي عباره عن حالات ملحة ذات أهمية تاريخية وأثرية وسياحية مطلقة نظرا لتفردها. يتم تنفيذ الأعمال من قبل شركة إمكان للإنشاءات، وهي شركة مقاولات رفيعة المستوى مقرها في عمان، ومن المتوقع تجهيز الموقع، بحلول تشرين الثاني 2024 بمتحف جديد في قبو كنيسة القديسة ماري والتي تعتبر أهم مبنى مسيحي من فترة الصليبيين في الأردن.
مع بدء هذه الأعمال الهامة، ينطلق فصل جديد في الحفاظ على التراث الثقافي للأردن وتعزيزه، مما يعد ليس فقط بتعزيز السلامة لهذه الكنوز التي تعود للقرون الوسطى، ولكن أيضًا توفير فرص أكبر للسياحة الثقافية والتنمية الاقتصادية في المنطقة.
