The stabilization work on the Crusader church of St. Mary at Shobak Castle is progressing rapidly. The ongoing efforts include consolidating the structural vaults and installing protective coverings, ensuring the long-term preservation of this important historical site.
Meanwhile, in the lower sections of the same building, new museum spaces are being created. These rooms will soon house a remarkable collection of Islamic inscriptions and ancient stone artifacts found at the site, further enriching the cultural attractivity of the area.
In addition, the consolidation of the stunning Ayyubid-Mamluk soap factory is in full swing. This unique architectural and historical treasure is being carefully restored, preserving its intricate details for future generations.
Tourist signage for the entire site is currently under production and will be installed by November. This initiative will enhance the visitor experience, providing an immersive and captivating journey through the castle's grounds.
Shobak is preparing to welcome the new year with modern exhibitions and accessible monuments, aiming to boost Jordan’s tourism while supporting the local community's economy.
This project is being implemented by the University of Florence’s Department of History, Archaeology, Geography, Art, and Performing Arts (SAGAS) in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Jordan and funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). Construction work is being carried out by the Jordanian contractor, IMKAN.
